OCTANE NUMBER

OCTANE NUMBER Octane number : the octane number of the given fuel is numerically taken as the percentage of iso-octane in the mixture of iso-octane & n-heptane which just matches with knocking characteristics of fuel under consideration. →thus, if a sample of petrol gives as much knocking as the mixture of 75 parts of iso-octane & 25 part of n-heptane , then its octane number is given as 75. →hydrocarbon iso-octane has very good combustible characteristics & exhibit very little tendency to detonate when mixed with air & ignited at high temperature. →the straight chain hydrocarbon , n-heptane knocks very readily & hence, its octane number is taken as zero. →fuels with octane rating greater than are quite common now-a-days & they are rated by comparision with the blend of iso-octane with TEL.
